TerraSan Investments : Fishing : TerraSan Pelagic Fishery (Pty) Ltd

The main activity of TerraSan Pelagic Fishery (Pty) Ltd. is to catch and process pelagic fish while the main source of income is the nett return on the company's pelagic rights.

Oranjerivier Visserye (Edms) Bpk, as the company was previously called, was incorporated on 8 June 1965. The company is in possession and have access to productive assets such as fishing vessels and a processing establishment, Oranjevis Joint Venture.

Company owned vessels are:

MFV Doloreze (CSW) - During December 2000 to May 2001 the Doloreze was rebuilt. New steel wheelhouse (improved onboard living conditions for crew) and main engine were fitted. A triplex and net stacker (ex Walvis Bay) to improve fishing effort were fitted. New omni Sonar (2004) fitted. It was built in 1970 by Louw & Halvorsen and is equipped to catch cooled pilchards. It has the capacity for 170 ton industrial fish and 70 ton directed pilchards.

MFV Toliko (RSW) - A steel vessel (ex Walvis Bay), MFV Toliko, was bought in March 2000 which is essential for catching directed pilchards and non quota (red-eye) species. It has the capacity for 130 ton.

TerraSan Pelagic also has catching agreements with BEE private boat owners affording access to additional fishing vessels.

Where possible, other quota holders are accommodated to process their fish in various ways. Quota holders with vessels sell their catch to the Joint Venture at the normal fish price plus a premium. This is happening more frequently with the migration of sardines from the West Coast to Mossel Bay where quota holders with small vessels are better equipped to catch and land in Mossel Bay and truck the fish to the West Coast. These vessels would be contracted to catch a portion of TerraSan's pilchard allocation.

TerraSan's vessels assists other quota holders to catch their fish when the need arises for various reasons.

TerraSan Pelagic holds an undivided share of 28,515% in the fish processing and freezing plant of Oranjevis Joint Venture and is used on a rental basis. The Joint Venture between TerraSan Pelagic Fishery (Pty) Ltd and Pioneer Fishing (West Coast (Pty) Ltd) trades as co-owners under the name of Oranjevis at St. Helena Bay. The joint venture was formed in order to obtain economies of scale by processing more fish through the plant. In 2002 Eagle Fishing (Pty) Ltd, a BEE company, joined the venture. Nett income and losses are shared in the ratio of raw fish delivered by the participants' pelagic vessels or vessels contracted by them.

Canned fish products are marketed under the Oranjevis Joint Venture's own brands Sea Pride, Viva and Perky Pet and also through an agent Federal Marine. Fish meal and fish oil are marketed through agents SA Fish Meal Marketing Co and SA Fish Oil Marketing Co.
