Blue Ocean Mussels
Terrasan holds a 100% shareholding in Blue Ocean Mussels (Pty) Ltd, South Africa’s premium mussel farm and processing factory located in Saldanha Bay and Velddrif, respectively. As the largest South African producer, Blue Ocean Mussels supplies over 70% of the South African market and with an aggressive growth strategy aims to displace imports and be the preferred supplier of a wide variety of mussel products. Terrasan has positioned mussel cultivation as a perfect opportunity to create long term sustainable job opportunities in a coastal community, combating declining fish resource in the poverty stricken areas along the West Coast. Blue Ocean Mussels provides a sustainable source of food that is rated high on the SASSI green list.
Terrasan has a 51% shareholding in Marifeed (Pty) Ltd, an aquafeed manufacturer situated in Hermanus that places a high value on research and continuously strives to improve the performance of their feed. Terrasan’s newest investment, Saldanha Protein was established in 1905 as the Saldanha Bay Canning Company, and has become a recognised force in the canned fish industry. Saldanha Protein creates one of South Africa’s favourite canned fish products, Saldanha Pilchards. In addition to this, the factory which produces canned fish products for the South African market also produces high quality Fish Meal and Fish Oil for local and export markets. The company’s facility holds HACCP accreditation for health and quality, as well as ISO 22000 certification – the first food processing factory in South Africa to achieve it. Currently the factory has the production capability of 20 tons of raw fish per hour in the cannery and 50 tons of raw fish per hour in the fish meal plant. With decades of success in the fishing industry, Saldanha Protein fits in perfectly within the Terrasan group of companies.
